About Microneedling

When home skin care products aren't effective but you aren't ready for surgery, consider a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatment like microneedling. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Aradhna Saxena is pleased to offer microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) at Spa 361 at the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute. We proudly use the Eclipse MicroPen, the SkinPen, and the Dermapen, depending on your skin's unique microneedling needs.

Microneedling involves the use of several fine-gauge needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries to the dermis (second layer) of the skin. The micro-injuries trigger the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, two nutrients that enhance the health and appearance of your skin. Easily combined with other skin treatments, like serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help reduce stretch marks, scars, and pores. Schedule a consultation at Spa 361 at the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute to learn more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize the treatment for your skin needs and goals.

Microneedling Ideal Candidates

In general, microneedling is safe and effective for everyone. However, it is not recommended during pregnancy or if you are using certain acne medication.

You may benefit from microneedling if you have slight to moderate skin issues, like rough skin texture or low elasticity. Microneedling treatments can also reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and pores. You should be willing to wait a while before seeing the results of your microneedling treatment, because the collagen and elastin will need time to grow and have an effect on the skin. However, you will ultimately have natural-looking results and gain better overall skin health.

Microneedling Procedure Technique

Microneedling is performed in a private treatment room in about 30 – 60 minutes. Numbing cream or a local anesthesia can be requested, but most patients feel only mild to no discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleansed before the microneedling handpiece is gently and evenly passed over your treatment areas to create the micro-injuries. After the microneedling is performed, a topical treatment, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum, can be applied; the tiny holes created by the treatment allow for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in, along with sunscreen, since your skin will be sensitive after the treatment.

What to Expect with Microneedling

You may have some swelling and redness for about a day, but this should subside quickly on its own. It may take about 1 – 2 months before you see visible improvements in the health and appearance of your skin, as the collagen and elastin levels need time to increase. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal results and lasting skin health.
