Why do we treat acne?
Acne is a very common condition seen in teenagers or pre-teenage kids, though it can affect people of all ages. Some feel acne is likely temporary and so does not need to be treated. But we beg to differ…we have found that treatment as soon as possible is better for patients.
Treatment allows patients to see faster results vs just letting mother nature play things out. I am not saying that results are seen overnight or instantly – but putting the time and effort forth, in the beginning, is well worth it. Treating acne also reduces the likelihood of scarring. If the acne lesion is prevented from forming then there is no growth for the person to pick, scrub, or squeeze – all things that may lead to scar formation. Early treatment can also reduce the chances of acne progression and worsening over time which would require stronger – possibly oral – medications.
One of the most important reasons, in my opinion, to treat acne in any and all patients, but most importantly in the adolescent group, is to protect their self-esteem. Many who develop acne actually suffer psychologically and emotionally and can struggle with poor self-image and depression due to the appearance of the bumps. The stress on a person from having acne has been shown to lead to depression or thoughts of suicide. Studies have shown that treating acne can actually alleviate these feelings.
So, if you or someone you care about has acne, we want to let you know we’d be happy to take care of you!
