Our Top Six Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling
Microneedling treatment gives patients smoother, younger-looking skin. Read our most common FAQs to learn more about this skin rejuvenation treatment.
If you want to boost your skin’s appearance, microneedling has gained significant traction thanks to new skin care technology. It’s an effective treatment that can offer a minimally invasive solution for common skin issues. At the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute in Greater Philadelphia, PA, we use the popular microneedling technique to encourage the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, enhancing the skin’s overall health and appearance.
When over-the-counter products are not effective in reducing scarring, fine lines, pore size, stretch marks, and pigment issues, consider a nonsurgical treatment like microneedling. Our staff will help you explore this option through our most commonly asked questions to find out what is involved in the process and how it can benefit you. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Aradhna Saxena or Dr. David Kasper at Spa 361 at the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute in Fort Washington and Lansdale, PA. Our expert team can create a personalized plan based on your unique needs.
1. What are the benefits of microneedling?
Microneedling involves the use of very fine needles that create tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin. This causes the body to begin stimulating new collagen and elastin, both key elements in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients can also see improvements in overall skin texture. Microneedling for stretch marks and acne scars is a very common practice among patients. A private consultation with one of our experienced staff members will give you a better idea of what microneedling can do for you.
2. What does the procedure involve?
When you come in for your skin rejuvenation appointment at Spa 361 at the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute, you will be led to our comfortable private treatment area to begin your session. After cleansing the skin, our staff uses an advanced microneedling handpiece that passes gently and evenly over the treatment areas. Most patients will receive a 30 minute treatment, based on the condition of the skin and type of treatment received. After microneedling, we use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum to boost your end results and make your skin even more gorgeous. We will also massage a moisturizer with sunscreen into your complexion, since your skin will be more sensitive after the session.
3. What’s downtime like after microneedling?
Whether you choose microneedling for acne scars or other skin issues, you will notice that the skin appears bright and red following your session. For this reason, we do not recommend planning any significant events right after your appointment. Downtime varies from person to person, but generally, you may experience mild redness and mild swelling for about 24 hours after your microneedling treatment. We recommend 4 treatments spaced 1 month apart to see visible improvements, as the body requires time to produce new collagen and elastin. Results will continue to improve for a few months as the collagen remodels. Ask your skin care specialist about planning maintenance treatments, scheduled every 4 – 6 weeks for the most optimal results.
4. Is microneedling treatment painful?
Patients typically feel some mild discomfort during their microneedling sessions, but it is not considered painful. Numbing cream or local anesthesia can be requested if you are nervous or anxious about the procedure.
5. What should I avoid after microneedling?
To ensure proper healing, we encourage patients to observe the following instructions for at least 24 hours after treatment. If you have any additional concerns, reach out to a friendly member of our staff in Fort Washington and Lansdale, PA.
Avoid direct sunlight and exposure to harmful UV rays
Do not go swimming or immerse your face in water
Avoid strenuous exercise or any activities that promote sweating
Do not apply make-up or lotions
6. Am I a candidate for microneedling?
Patients of any skin type are candidates for treatment as long as you do not have any active infections or lesions. Candidates should be prepared to wait 1 – 2 months after the initial four treatments before seeing results, since it takes time for new collagen and elastin to produce a noticeable difference in your skin. While microneedling treatment is safe and effective, it is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals using certain acne medications.
